It will also be reinstating a curious piece of Mortal Kombat nostalgia: Friendship finishing moves. First introduced way back in Mortal Kombat 2 , Friendship moves were a nonviolent alternative to the deadly Fatalities for which the series had already become infamous. They were initially extremely difficult to pull off, requiring players to use specific moves and take no damage in order to make them work. That perseverance paid off. Friendships showed off increasingly silly sequences in which Kombatants made up after their fights in various ways.
For instance, Johnny Cage would hand his enemy an autographed photo. In another memorable Friendship, Kung Lao would pull a rabbit out of a hat. A few years ago, Shacknews ' Ozzie Mejia looked back at the evolution of Friendships through the franchise. Mejia explained that the origins for Friendships came from an unlikely place.
Much like developers have found ways to troll critics and fans in the past, Friendships were created as a tongue-in-cheek response to the controversies surrounding the series' first installment. As Mejia explained, they were clearly meant as a joke, but "they provided an escape from the wanton violence that filled the game and helped keep players from getting overly saturated with gore.
Friendships were basically dropped from the series with the release of Mortal Kombat 4 , but they hold a special place in the hearts of fans. When the news broke regarding the return of Friendships to the franchise, Mejia seemed to the very excited , mentioning how long ago he wrote that retrospective. Below is a table of all Friendship Fatality inputs for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch - which have all been condensed into shorthand that you can view in the table below.
Read more about the Mortal Kombat 11 fatalities and see them in action further down the page. Players can perform a Friendship Fatality the same way you would perform a normal Fatality - once the opponent is defeated and you are given a brief window to "Finish Them", you can enter the button inputs at a certain distance to activate the finisher. Players can also use Easy Fatality Tokens to trigger a Friendship just by using the designated buttons. Baraka throws up a cake into the air before dicing it to pieces as it falls.
Cetrion uses the power of nature to grow a giant tree complete with vines to swing on. D'Vorah goes into a metamorphosis to grow beautiful butterfly wings. Frost shows off her flawless ice-skating skills in a homemade rink. Geras uses the Sands of Time to craft one epic sand castle. Jade summons a pinata before wacking it to unleash a ton of candy!
Jacqui lays down a Kronika -themed punching bag to let off a bit of stress. Kabal speeds over to lay down an epic xylophone solo. Kano puts some shrimp on the barbie and heats up some delicious meats with his laser eye.
Kollector whips out a ton of instruments to play a tune on all of them - all by himself. Kotal Khan takes a relaxing break to suntan on the beach with a fold-out chair.
It's such an innocent and funny Friendship that can players chuckle every time they see it. There's a lot that can be done with Sheeva in terms of Friendships.
Her four arms create endless possibilities. Her original Friendship has her spinning plates on sticks on each of her hands. In MK11 , Sheeva utilizes her four arms and plays a glass harp with multiple wine glasses on a table. Like Sindel, this Friendship isn't inherently bad.
It's just a little too simplistic and doesn't fully realize her potential. An alternative example could be using her arms to quickly build something, such as a tower, with building blocks. She could admire her work before it tumbles over on top of her.
Not enough hands in the world could save a tumbling tower of blocks. Originally, Sub Zero's Friendships mimicked Scorpions. In MK2 he presents a Sub Zero doll asking players to go out and buy one. In MK3 , he plays a Jack-in-a-box with a snowman inside.
His Friendship begins with him gleefully expressing his excitement in a child-like fashion before running off-screen. He returns riding an ice cream bike. He reaches in the freezer and grabs a popsicle stick, and uses his ice powers to create a popsicle. The amount of joy Sub Zero has toward ice cream is both hilarious and relatable.
Sonya Blade's Friendships starting off in an incredibly underwhelming fashion. In MK3 , Sonya swung her arms back and forth with a smile on her face. That was it. In UMK3 , Sonya will pose before flowers grow around her. While it was a step up from her previous one, it was still underwhelming and disappointing in itself.
Thankfully, Sonya's MK11 Friendship made up for this by having her play fetch with one of her robots. The robot would bring back a dead Tarkatan to her approval. Jax's Friendships started out very simple.
