Pavlova bailed him out of prison, then paid all his debts and legal expenses. D'Andre and Pavlova privately married in Victor D'Andre became her impresario and they formed a touring ballet troupe. On her expensive estate Pavlova kept a pond with swans, alluding to her favourite role.
At her home Pavlova established a dance school which catered to her touring troupe. Initially her troupe had only eight Russian dancers. Later, with the growing success and popularity of Anna Pavlova, her troupe grew to sixty dancers and staff, all managed by D'Andre. Pavlova made her Metropolitan Opera House debut in , and toured America and Europe before her brief final return to Russia.
She made her last appearance in St. Petersburg in and spent the rest of her life on tour. King Alfonso of Spain and the King and Queen of the Belgians were among other royal personages who paid her homage. During her first appearance in Paris, Sarah Bernhardt and Mme. Duse helped to make her triumph there notable. Upon her return to Russia, after her first American tour, in , the late Czar Nicholas summoned her to the royal box and congratulated her.
In the chronicles of her life, the dancer quotes the Czar as saying: "I so much regret that despite all I hear about your wonderful swan dance I have never seen it. Yet I am called one of the absolute monarchs. Pavlova was always partial to the dance of the dying swan, and for years she kept swans in the garden of her home in Hempstead, London, so she could study their movements.
The inspiration for the swan dance came first to her, she said, while watching the swans in a public park in Leningrad. The dancer's last appearance in this country was during the season of She was due to return here next Fall for an extended tour, covering about seventy-five cities. Escudero, famous Spanish dancer, was expected to come with the company which the dancer was to bring with her.
