Trey ratcliff why nikon

I never said he was Picasso. I said that by the standard with which we judge things, Picasso was a lower-tier painter who couldn't even draw a straight face. Critics love to take things out of context. I said his work looks realistic compared to the automated stuff we see everywhere. Certainly the stuff posted here look a lot better than the amateurish results that flood HDR forums.

And several of his shots looked like they could have been lit that way, not HDR'd. It's his "ability" to control HDR and use it to enhance an otherwise poorly lit scene that I'm referencing.

As for the final result, everyone has different tastes. It's like certain foods: you love them or hate them, but who's to say what's "good" or "bad? Picasso could draw "straight faces" as well as many "old masters" by the age of eleven. In fact it came so easily to him he got bored with it. Hence the development. GaryJP, yes, I know that.

He has many "normal" works that only came to light afterward. My point is he was judged for his "ugly" paintings which is only a sample of his entire body of work, just as TR here when he was really a master inside.

Again, not making any direct comparisons between Picasso and TR. Who's to say TR didn't get bored with "normal" pictures and decided to go surreal? I've had a love hate relationship with Trey's photography over the years. He has an incredible eye for composition and has some truly stunning results.

I fell out of love with HDR a few years ago and found a lot of his photos very surreal and pushed beyond what I would consider tasteful. I do understand the urge at times to get a striking shot from of a good composition in less than perfect light! A definite pioneer in HDR and look forward to seeing what comes next. And Trey, if you are reading this I had a good laugh at your comment about the sleeping security guard at xingping youth hostel as exactly the same thing happened to me in The only guru is Karl Taylor.

He puts a lot of thought and planning into his photos. You can feel his passion when you watch his videos. His photos come out unique and look natural. Not over processed HDR crap. Trey's a great guy He does not presume anyone would like his work.

Quite humble. He truly enjoys what he does He's been a great teacher to me. I spent 2 weeks with him in Africa. Learned a lot about photography and how to push the margins. Is HDR for everyone? Of course not. Yet, over time those who have pushed the margins in their field of endeavor are the very one's who have advanced the conversation and spurred more creativity.

Here's to the crazy ones!!! Without them life would be pretty bland. I'm willing to bet he still has some Nikon gear. It's like Bud in Kill Bill 2 where he claims he hawked his Hatori Hanzo sword on the street but come to find out later he lied and still had it in his possession.

And if he enjoys Sony, then all the more power to him. But as I mentioned in a previous forum, I find it interesting on his website that he recommends nothing but Sony products from the bottom to the top. I question his claim that he's not getting any kickback from Sony for using their products. Having traveled with Trey I can assure you he receives no kick back or favors from Sony. He still has a few Nikon lenses e. Trey knows what he likes and endorses it because he believes in it There are now seven RX models currently on the market that you can buy.

Fred Mueller good eye for composition ShelNf Process a photo through Silver Efex, and you're an artist. Stitzer23 Crank it up to 11? Yeah why not. This is art after all and art is limitless.

Just like sarcasm. Hclarkx I agree with smokin. Fri13 Criticism is always about positivity and never about negativity. But on a few of them the HDR is strong that it is distracting. Even quite crappy. Smeggypants I liked one or two of them, but many are way too over processed for me.

Peter K Burian Three of the photos are fabulous but yeah, the HDR thing has been so overdone, it's getting to seem gimmicky. I think we are approaching the end of this fad now. Fri13 Did you thought He has taken these photos years ago? TheDman LOL! Koolblue2 I like the wide variety of styles represented here in his photos.

Reilly Diefenbach Some are over the top, but I like them anyway. TheDman Who cares about semantics, we all know what we're talking about. Fri13 MatthewRogers is correct. TheDman Sorry guys, the world has spoken on this, and it hasn't sided with you. Fri13 Sorry I don't know what you mean with "the world"? Can you explain what you mean? NZ Scott Love this guy's photos - his blog is one of the few photography sites that I regularly check in to.

He's been living in New Zealand for the past few years, I understand. PVCdroid I've been a fan of Trey's for a long time. Ben Stonewall And I'd never heard of him till two days ago ;-.

Ben Stonewall 75 grand a pop! Nice work if you can get it GaryJP I think people will find that for full teen fan girl effect the word should be "haterz". Ben Stonewall Ur al jst 8turz! JCFan Looking at all the negative comments all I can conclude is that many photographers or wannabe photographers are all a bunch of childish snobs. However, the theory of John Cage is a lot better than actually sitting through much of his work. Artpt Lovely photos TheDman I would say 6, 11, and 13 definitely have the Photomatix look.

The Name is Bond The abuse of the word 'hate' gets on my nerves. Joe Ogiba The 1 reason they hate is because he dumped Nikon DSLRs for Sony mirrorless cameras and his body of work gets millions of views from his fans all over the world.

Ratcliff and Kinkade are two of a kind. AbrasiveReducer Whatever else you want to say abut Trey, he is a nice guy, free with information and self-taught. Steve in GA These pictures I would hesitate to call them photos are interesting, and some are beautiful.

Steve in GA graybalanced: Since you have gotten into name-calling mode with your, " ShelNf "Things as they are? You must hate long exposures, bokeh, startrails, etc TheDman Manually blending exposures. ThirstyDursty Haters going hate!

Internet is full of armchair anonymous experts. BadScience so in your la-la land every comment is positive? You can set up some macros on your computer and leave it overnight and get hundreds of images out the other end that are as good as this rubbish If these images were NOT HDR, how many would be keepers?

Whatever your deal, you need to chill a bit. GaryJP "Haters going hate! Nikman20 I think Ratcliff is a master of marketing. Maybe he's a Peter Lik wannabe! Dennis Was there a point to pretending you're sending a telegram? GaryJP Thanks. I too stopped the first time you suggested. Xezi I was scrolling down to see where all this was going. RudivanS HDR is ok in small doses - like junk food..

Pity the average Joe. Good post. GaryJP Anyne who uses the word "hater" is already someone for whom "Comic Con" is the highest aspirational achievement and has ruled themselves out of serious consideration. Mine keep coming up with Photomatix written across them. If HDR is fake BadScience all images are just representations - so of course all images are "fake" in that sense. However, HDR nearly always looks naff.

BadScience well, if the only way to criticise literature, music, photography, art, sculpture - just about any craft or art - is on purely technical merits, then we are all screwed.

Eric Hensel "Inarguable" in the sense that there can be no true consensus. BadScience who says anything about consensus - a sizable proportion of the population will like rubbish like this and kinkade. My photography is better than this. A lot better, so why should I like this?

BadScience the physical object, or the data on the hard disk is real. Eric Hensel "A lot of people think it is very poor and crass attempt at art. BadScience you are making this up as you go along aren't you? So, yes, you arguing against your own points. Eric Hensel "one minute according to you alone photography can only discuss technical competence;" --with any degree of assuredness?

Have a nice day, Mr. Btw, a couple of college level art classes might help BadScience "with any degree of assuredness? You say A then argue against A. Eric Hensel "Why do I need college classes? BadScience perspective? Eric Hensel "HDR is seen by many many people to be a crass form of photography. BadScience You keep arguing against yourself and are simultanelosuly winning and losing. It looks like teletubby land You think art can only really be critiqued on a technical level, and that any other critisicm is purely personal.

Eric Hensel 1, 9, and 12 are great --affecting me on a visceral level --places I can imagine thanks to these shots but have never been. I do like photo 5. ChrisH37 I wonder how many here who claim to hate 'HDR' have ever pulled a shadow up, lightened a face, added a gradient to a sky, pushed the highlight or shadow slider in LR, or used a graduated ND filter?

BadScience Chris - from your comment - do you know what HDR is and how it differs from, say dodging and burning? ChrisH37 BadScience HDR is simply high dynamic range, dodging and burning is one of the earlier methods of increasing the dynamic range of an image. It all has the same basis and is part of the same concept. BadScience Chris, dodging and burning selectively changes the luminosity of parts of an image. GaryJP Not with the non-saccading eye we don't.

Does this mean you've not enjoyed any Pixar stuff? BadScience dash - the opening words of the first star wars was CGI? Color grading does not mean CGI.

MyReality Who says photographs have to be "realistic"? T3 Photography is a bit tent. Create I agree, not many images are straight out of the camera, there's a lot of manipulation going on, what's real? ThatCamFan If people here used as much time photographing as they use to write hateful comments about others, perhaps they could someday be featured here. ThatCamFan Thats true but people here are hating on it without reason and they dont say why they dont like them.

GaryJP To me many of these are awful. Some people will prefer extended battery units, extended grips, or external mic booms, etc. The first camera company to do this will create real excitement. But on a serious note. I still feel a bit sentimentality because in some remote stupid corner of my self-consciousness, it invalidates the time and effort and above all, money!

It is a lovely comment, actually. I am so honored to see things like this. You can carry around whatever combination of metal, mirrors, sensors, and glass you desire. In fact, you may be in really good shape when this mirrorless thing really hits its prime.

Many new Sony cameras or maybe even Nikon or Canon will make something compelling in or when you decide to go to the next level.

Goodbye Nikon. July : Thursday Jul : Thursday. Disclosures about Sony None! Above : After weaning myself off Nikon over the past weeks, I had no hesitation at all whipping out my Sony to get this shot a few nights ago. That mm lens effectively lets me zoom all the way into mm with the crop factor, and all in a lens that is smaller than a Coke can! Above : When I got up in this situation atop one of the highest buildings in Beijing, I was used to having my old trusty Nikon system there.

But, I vowed to continue the experiment and leave the D back in the hotel room. So it was just me and the Sony NEX Because of that horrible decision to require the user to HOLD DOWN the shutter button during auto-bracketing, the photos would have come out too shaky.

So, that means I did not use auto-bracketing and instead turned on the 2 second timer so I could let go and let the camera become stabilized. I had to rinse and repeat this for a few different exposures. Above : A low-light shot in China where I was really able to use the manual focus and focus peaking to make sure it was perfect!

Above : She was backlit and coming through the hallway at me. Above : The idea that you can get to mm with a lens that is smaller than a Coke can is pretty mind-bending. I pulled out the camera and shot this right behind my house! Above : Even though it is not as hardy as the professional builds of the Nikon, it stands up to the cold really well. Above : I took this one morning on the way to Milford Sound with the kit lens.

Above : Night photography was a lot of fun with the NEX The preview image through the EVF is always very grainy and looks horrible. But when I actually took the shot note I was on a tripod and looked at the result in the EVF, it is nice and buttery-smooth.. Above : Here is another photo with the kit lens. It was a great camera and now my son is using it. What was your first paid photography job? Did you enjoy it? Were you scared? Did you make any mistakes?

I think, really, the website of www. We license photos, sell advertising, and the like. So, in a way, simply keeping the site fresh every day with good content is like a job. But there have been countless mistakes!

How did you decide to make photography more than a hobby? If photography is your full time job, how did you make that decision? Any regrets? If you are not a full time photographer, what is stopping you?

What is your full time job? Any plans to become a full time photographer in the future? Photography is certainly more than a hobby, but I would not call it a job. I feel very lucky that the photography bit is so profitable and growing.

I do not handle the business side if it — the DragonLady my wife does that. I believe we now live in a world where you can do many things with your life. Some are vocations, some are avocations, some make money, some are for fun, etc.

These things flex and change many times a year. What was the last straw, the final decision maker to make you go digital?

What do you miss about film? What is the hardest part of the job when shooting for a client? What is the hardest part of the job when shooting for yourself? I do not shoot for clients.

I only shoot for myself. It also helps me to keep the art pure. I often warn new photographers not to over-mix photography and capitalism. Both of those things are great things on their own, but mixing them together can cause unnecessary stress in your art. If you can magically make them both work together, that is great. For example, I know many wedding photographers that absolutely love it. It works for them.

I have an HDR Tutorial www. I really enjoy teaching people how to do these things.
