Thread starter Chomby Start date Apr 7, Tags necroposting relevant reply topic. Chomby Just Another User. I guess I have only been a part of one other forum, so I'm not super experienced with all forum etiquette, but I never saw an issue with necroposting. I like how a thread is brought back from the dead and made relevant again.

It's cool that years later, people have more to add to the pot. I don't see it as any different from a new post really if the topic is still relevant. I kind of want to necropost myself because I'm sure there are a lot of very interesting topics from like 10 years ago, but I don't want other users to start hating my guts so I guess I'll refrain from that Places I've moderated had no issues with necroing but it definitely differs from place to place.

If a bot could be put in place that could, say, automatically lock threads after a year of inactivity, it would mitigate any issues with necroing the administration would have.

ManicTherapsid Guest. I've noticed that a lot of the time the OP hasnt been active in the better part of a decade or more. Do you think if I started necroposting, I would get flamed? Chomby said:. But now, on a second thought: indeed, what is wrong about that actually?

On most forums you are flamed for necroing even a 3 month old post after searching diligently for it - this period seems to be getting less and less over time yet posting the same thing again and again is somehow socially acceptable. I am posting here since I don't know where else I can respond to you about this, and I need to clarify: 1. I now know to be more careful and to look back at the original post, before I respond to someone else. Hopefully folks can understand that honest mistake on my part, and not feel ire against me for responding in this manner to new questions by new members. I did knowingly necropost last night on the "Let's Tell a Story" post. That is a game post, not an informational thread.

None of the arguments against necroposting apply to that post. No one has to read the old threads before replying. Like every other word game thread, they can just jump into the game and play, or they can ignore it. I recently came back to be more active in SMF after not posting for awhile.

I even became a lifetime supporting member because I want this forum to survive and thrive as an alternative to FB soap pages. That won't happen if people are called-out for rule-breaking without first carefully considering what actually happened -- such as accidentally replying to someone ELSE who necroposted, or attempting to revive an old game thread. Other forums have admin functions that allow an admin to close an old thread, and to move a necropost into a new thread.

If either or both of those functions are possible with this forum, this would get the message across in a manner that would be less unwelcoming.

Last edited: Jan 4, I do agree that it is easy to reply to an old thread without noticing the date. I have been around a while and at times I do not notice the dates, so I do realize how it can happen. This seems like a good time to ask: How old is old? How do I define a necropost? Is it no post in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, etc? Even we modmins sometimes do the same thing as what you did.

Like it has been stated before, necroposting is NOT against SMF rules as per the forum owners' stated wishes as a matter of fact.

Although you may be bothered by it, not everyone feels the same way as you do about it Live and let live, folks. There are more important things in life to get upset about. How old is old? It depends on who you ask. How do you define a necropost?
